Domestic Violence Resources in Calgary

Domestic Violence cuts across every line of geography and demography. Abuse is found in every community of our city. It is crucial to understand that many incidents of domestic violence occur on a daily basis, and with several of them unreported!

Here you will find biopsychosocial resources on the issue of Domestic Violence within our communities. The resources contained herein, are important information readers can utilize for awareness, prevention, education, and referral purposes. Many of the programs and agencies in this booklet do not require referrals for clients to access them.

Calgary– Women’s Services

YWCA Calgary

The YWCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting women and their families with issues of domestic violence, homelessness, and poverty. They provide a 24-hour crisis line, the YW Sheriff King Home, a domestic violence shelter, and support outreach programs for women leaving or experiencing domestic abuse. The shelter and outreach program can be accessed through the crisis line, and free childcare is available as well.

WAVAW Rape Crisis Center

The WAVAW Rape Crisis Center supports women who have experienced sexual violence. They offer free counselling services and support groups, as well as Indigenous counselling services for individuals who want to heal through Indigenous practices and principles of the Medicine Wheel. They also have a Sexual Assault Response Team as the first point of contact for intake services, which provides crisis response and support, safety plan development, hospital accompaniment, stabilization sessions, and legal advocacy.

Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter

The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter is focused on ending family violence and abuse in the lives of women, children, youth, and men. They provide many innovative safety, healing, and prevention programs to the community. Our Community Services Counsellors provide counselling in a safe place in the community that supports safety planning, case planning, parenting support, and navigation of community resources which are available to meet the needs of families.

Awo Taan Healing Lodge Society & Women’s Emergency Shelter

The Awo Taan society is guided by Indigenous traditional teachings and Medicine Wheel principles and is available to anyone affected by abuse. They offer programs and an emergency shelter to shield and protect vulnerable women and children against family violence. The 24-hour emergency shelter provides emergency accommodations, counselling, advocacy, and education services for up to three weeks. Other services include a women’s circle of safety workshop, outreach programs, youth supports, and Indigenous supports.

Sagesse Domestic Violence Prevention Society

Sagesse society works on prevention and intervention on domestic violence through education, advocacy, and services. They provide peer and group support for individuals affected by or at risk of domestic abuse, or involved in sex work. They also offer education workshops and access to the Domestic Abuse Screening Tool to assess an individual’s domestic abuse risk level.

Sonshine Community Services

Sonshine Community Services supports women and children fleeing from family violence. The Sonshine Center is a residential center that provides an 18-month program and a 6-month follow-up for a smooth transition back into the community. They also offer the Sonshine Children’s Center for children exposed to trauma and family violence, community counselling, and family day homes.

The Brenda Strafford Center

The center, run by the Brenda Strafford Society for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, is a progressive shelter for women and children leaving domestic violence. It includes housing, individual and group counselling, child and youth counselling, childcare services, outreach, and multicultural and Indigenous supports. Residents must qualify for the Calgary Housing Company subsidy and be eligible for the Calgary Housing Company’s Social Housing List.

Next Step Ministries

Next Step Ministries is a non-profit Christian organization focused on women who want are leaving sexual exploitation. They offer an outreach program, confidential supported housing, day program classes, and a follow-up care program for women through long-term relationships and trauma-informed counselling after they leave the programs.

Inn From the Cold

Inn from the Cold uses trauma-informed care to support vulnerable families to find stability and housing. Their main programs are homelessness prevention and diversion, emergency family shelter, and supportive housing. The homelessness prevention program assigns a caseworker to develop a plan to help with finances, housing, legal issues, and coordinate counselling as needed. The shelter and housing programs also include health and wellness, child, cultural, and employment supports. Programs are available for families with pregnant mothers or children under age 18.

Calgary Pakistani Support Group Association

The CPSG is a charitable organization to support the needs of immigrant and refugee families. The maskan program is named after the Urdu word for a small, peaceful home. They provide a safe transitional home for women and children leaving domestic violence, along with essential needs, training, and counselling support. They also have community outreach, community engagement, and uplifting youth programs.

Discovery House

Discovery House is a charity dedicated to ending the cycle of domestic violence for women and children. They help support women and children in transition from emergency shelters to the next stage of their recovery. Punjabi Community Health Services

The PCHS provides equitable and culturally-informed health services for the South Asian community. They offer a 14-week women’s growth circle program for women who have experienced domestic abuse. Aboriginal Friendship Center of Calgary

The AFCC provides housing, outreach, counselling, and cultural support for Indigenous people. Housing supports offer case managers to assist with planning and coordinating. Counselling programs are offered for individuals and groups, and women’s groups are offered to help women connect with their community’s cultural teachings. All programs, other than housing, can be accessed through the contact form on their website.

The CIWA aims to empower and transition immigrant women to success in Canada. CCASA

Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse is the only sexual assault centre in Calgary and surrounding areas that offers specialized counselling and support for individuals 12 years of age and older. Kerby Center

Kerby Rotary Shelter provides a safe place for older men and women of over 55 years fleeing elder abuse. They also provide information and referrals for older adults, their families, friends and professionals. The Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) is a collaboration between Carya, Kerby Centre, and the Calgary Police Service. EART assists police and social workers to respond to allegations of abuse including emotional, physical, sexual, or financial abuse, as well as neglect, and violation of
rights.

CLG recognizes that people experiencing family violence have unique needs when going through the family law justice system. Their family law lawyers, and social work program advocate provide legal services to people who have experienced family violence and abuse. Their lawyers can provide summarized legal advice, help draft family law applications, and prepare for court appearances and connect clients to the right legal help, including accessing Legal Aid Alberta.

PATHS - Domestic Violence Response Program (DVRP)

DVRP addresses a need within the community to provide personal protection, empowerment, and safety to people living under the threat of domestic/relational violence and stalking. CCAA - Child Witness Court Preparation Program

The program is designed to provide direct assistance to the increasing number of children being called upon to testify in court proceedings. Designed for children (3-17) who have been abused or witnessed abuse. The needs of the child witnesses are primarily addressed in group settings. Each group consists of two sessions requiring the commitment of both the child and an adult who will support the child in court.
